Gladys Paquin - Desert Museum Store

Gladys Paquin was born in a church run hospital near Gallup, NM called Rehobeth, and recalls her mother and father were living in Zuni at the time.  Gladys is a multi-cultural person not only due to her mother being Laguna and her father Zuni, but during her youth she lived in California, Santa Ana Pueblo and finally settled in Laguna around 1979 where she was enrolled by a relative on the basis that her mother was Laguna. She received her name "Sratyu'we" while living at Santa Ana Pueblo which she signs on the bottom of her pots.  Gladys is the foremost Laguna potter living today although her work has declined in productivity due to fatigue and burnout. All of her design elements and motifs are traditional in form that she gleans from books and museum collections.  Her son Andrew Padilla is also a talented potter but he works more in contemporary style in contrast to his mother's work.
