1960s Black and Red-on-Buff Low-Shouldered Jar: Fawn Garcia Navasie

This low and wide-shouldered jar by Fawn Garcia Navasie is typical of the early Hopi shapes from the Sikyatki ruins excavated by Jesse Walter Fewkes in the late 1800s. This polychrome of black and red-on-buff looks old; in all honesty the painting is not perfect and there has been some color fading in the major areas of paint. This probably occurred in the firing process. When the fire becomes too hot, the intense heat causes the stronger colors to fade. It appears to have been fired outdoors in the traditional manner. The shape of this jar is extraordinary and well worth the price. This piece probably was made in the 1960s. It is signed on the bottom with the name Fawn, and the mark of a deer hoof just under the name.
