Carla Nampeyo: Polychrome Butterfly Jar

This wonderful Hopi jar by Carla Nampeyo represents a traditional Sikyatki butterfly motif that was reintroduced by Grace Chapella, probably in the 1940-1950s. Carla is the daughter of Tom Polacca and granddaughter of Fannie Polacca Nampeyo, and like many Hopi potters in the Nampeyo family, can be traced back to her great-grandmother, Nampeyo of Hano who, with her husband Lesso, reinvented the Sikyatki style.
