Charles Navasie: Yellow-Orange Hopi Jar
This excellent yellow-orange Hopi pot is made by Charles Navasie, who signs his work with a frog design much like his grandmother, Joy Navasie (Frog Women) did years before. His grandmother signed her work with the outline of a frog while Charles draws a stylized frog and then fills the center with his last name. This particular jar by Charles is painted in a four part repetitive fish like design. The line work is clean and marvelously done with crisp colors of black, terracotta and rust brown. Although the quality of his design work is equal to that of his grandmother in precision, he has chosen a different color combination as his signature. Most of his jars and bowls are black and sienna on yellow-orange clay, while that of Joy’s was almost always red and black on white clay.
