Elizabeth and Marcellus Medina: Kachina Dancer and Maiden Jar

This is an award-winning design that Elizabeth and Marcellus Medina have perfected. This polychrome jar of tan, brown and black on buff clay is a wonderful mix of both traditional and non-traditional Zia design elements. The images depicted on this pot are portioned off into three distinct sections. There are two views of an eagle dancer—both of the front and back—and an additional maiden, each dancing under a stylized butterfly found on old Hopi Sikyatki pieces as well as several traditional Zia bird motifs. This is a great example of cross-cultural use of design elements, both modern and old. Stunning!
