Thomas Polacca: Carved Polychrome Sun-Face Kachina Pot

Thomas Polacca, grandson to Nampeyo of Hano, is considered one of the better Hopi potters to carve and incise designs into the surface of his clay pots. His daughter, Carla Claw Nampeyo, and other members of his family are potting and carving in his tradition, however none have equaled his efforts yet. This piece by Tom is extraordinary in a number of ways: the first is the way the pot glows. It just does; it is perfect. It is also unique in that Tom very seldom made a pot in this particular shape, which is also perfect. This pot defies description.  Artist biography available here.
